Beautification
A current focus of this committee are the visual and safety issues around entering/exiting the many non-conforming parking lots in our business core, which could be resolved and improved visually with simple landscape planters/barriers. FoF has reached agreement with US Bank to upgrade their landscaping and re-introduce boulevard trees along Main Street and Harbor Avenue. The bank has committed over $6,000 to this portion of the Freeland Beautification project starting in January 2006. In addition, we recently received a $45,000 grant from the Regional Transportation Planning Organization to install Landscape Planter/Barriers along Main Street and Harbor Avenue as part of our parking access/pedestrian safety/beautification project. We are collecting donations of wood and commitments for labor. We have a projected start date of April/May 2006.
Destination Pathways
This committee is working to establish a pedestrian walking path around the core of Freeland, helping move people safely (we have no sidewalks) between key destinations. Nearly 3 miles of trails from Freeland Park to downtown services and businesses have been identified. Key partners include local property owners supportive of such access, Island County and the Port of South Whidbey. Easements, liability issues and funding for creation and maintenance are the work of this committee. We have acquired a three-foot easement across the Capes property connecting Layton with Dutch Hollow. Surveying, grading and prep work have been started. The Port of South Whidbey has provided over $5,000 for this project.
Pocket Parks
The pocket garden behind FOF offices on Main Street, cared for by FOF volunteers, is a small oasis of natural beauty for our community to enjoy and serves as a demonstration project for future Pocket Parks.
Freeland Benches
The planter/bench/arbors in front of the Washington Mutual Bank and Knitty Pearl are the first of many envisioned to rest and serve our community while walking through the Freeland business core. Businesses or individuals may purchase them, and FOF volunteers build and install them on location.
